Chilean Cross-Cultural Adaptation of The Neuropsychological Vertigo Inventory (NVI) in Adult Population.

Abstract

Introduction: There is evidence that relates the symptoms associated with vestibular al­terations with various cognitive dysfunctions. The Neuropsychological Questionnaire for Vertigo was designed to assess patient-reported neuropsychological problems associated with vertigo. Objective: To adapt the NVI Neuropsychological Vertigo Questionnai­re cross-culturally to Chilean Spanish. Material and Methods: Study approved by the Scientific Ethics Committee of the San Juan de Dios Hospital, Santiago, Chile; protocol No. 247 v1.0. For the research, the stages of direct translation from English to Spanish, synthesis in single general translation; back-translation from Chilean Spanish to Ameri­can English; translation analysis by a committee of experts and pilot testing of 20 people. The agreement of the experts’ evaluations and the internal consistency were determined. SPSS v21 was used and a significance level of p<0.05 was considered. Results: A weak level of agreement was obtained among the judges; nevertheless, the agreement was statistically significative. The questionnaire obtained a good internal consistency, consistent with the original version. The observations reported by the experts were considered and included by the researchers in the new version of the instrument. Conclusion: The translation and


cross-cultural adaptation of the NIV into Chilean Spanish was accepted by the committee of experts and then applied to a group of participants. The stages developed under inter­national guidelines support its cross-sectional application in the Chilean adult population with vestibular disorders and cognitive complaints. It is necessary to continue with the validation stage of this questionnaire in order to recommend its clinical application in the national context.
